T-1B2-TE-1 - Biofuel for rail freight transport

TBD

Background

IPCC WG3 definition: .

Sustainable biofuels are produced from biomass, such as arable crops, food waste or residues from the forest industry. Since biomass has accumulated carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during its growth, and release emissions during natural degradation in any case, emissions from biofuels are assumed to be zero. However, biofuel vehicles still cause particulate emissions.

Sustainability Category: Amber

Amber

This transition element has only moderate climate impact but may be necessary for maintaining urban needs, with a clear pathway to decarbonization. While not aligned with net-zero targets, this transition element is actively improving the emissions profile and represents intermediate performance on the path to sustainability.
